I bet you’re wondering if you’ll get to see pictures of dinosaurs? The Land Before Time reference definitely alludes to that. In this case, we are referring to just… “the land.” This adventure surely brought us some of the most beautiful views we’ve ever seen! We are also convinced if you ever find yourself in Switzerland you should definitely venture to see the town of Poschiavo.
DAY TRIP — DAVOS to POSCHIAVO
The concierge, Bruno, at our hotel mentioned taking a day trip to Poschiavo on the panoramic train – the Bernina Express – to “take in” the country side of Switzerland. What a great recommendation that was, as apparently ‘The Land Before Time’ exists! (Well, at least in our opinion.) We were already in awe of the beauty Switzerland has to offer, but were not expecting this gem of a find!
The train ride itself is about 7 hours roundtrip (RT) — 3.5 hours from Davos to Poschiavo and 3.5 hours from Poschiavo back to Davos.
We took only the section from Davos to Poschiavo as it fit best into our schedule. We also booked coach (on the way there) and first class seats (on the way back), and were able to gather two different experiences on this little field trip. First class has seats clustered by two-seat – aisle – four-seat … as opposed to the four-seat – aisle – four-seat configuration in coach. We heard coach can be very crowded if there are tour groups, but discovered first class was actually more crowded than coach on our trip. The train is air-conditioned, and does make stops where passengers get on and off throughout the journey. If you’re a photo enthusiast, this train will provide reflecting windows in almost every photo. Bummer! Maybe check out the Regional Express instead, where you can bring the windows down. Here’s a rundown on both train lines. And if you would like to save some money on your return trip or actually in both directions you can take the “regular” Swiss trains for less money giving up the panorama windows, pre-recorded information about the routes, and access to the snacks/drinks.
Some key bulleted information for those of us less inclined to read an entire post:
- The Bernina Express route begins in Chur, the oldest city in Switzerland.
- Trains run along the Albula Railway, one of the most spectacular narrow gauge railways in the world.
- At the highest part of the route you’ll travel beside three lakes within the Bernina Mountain pass. (pic below)
- The Bernina Express ends its route in Tirano, Italy. It passes through this town before reaching the station.
- The train is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage train route; of which there are very few in the world.
And for fun here’s some thoughts from Papa Varty:
The town’s pizza is amazing…
The town is much better when ice cream shops are open…
And “it’s a very lovely town.”
Trust us and take a trip to “The Land Before Time!” We swear it exists and you won’t be disappointed. If anything, you’ll never stop blabbing about it, like us!
